Barely three months into its official release, Android Wear 2.0 should still be enjoying its honeymoon period. But the truth is, it never really had one. Despite a high-profile launch and pent-up anticipation among Android enthusiasts, the roll-out has been less-than-stellar, with few manufacturers supporting it with new models, and most older watches unable to take advantage of the best features.
Huawei Watch 2 priced up for release today
When we wrote the original Huawei Watch review below, back in 2017, the Huawei Watch 2 became the best Wear OS smartwatch. Three years later, and it's still right up there. And although it's becoming increasingly difficult to buy new stock is often released onto the market during sales, so it pays to keep an eye out.
Huawei is one of the last tech companies still interested in Android Wear. The Watch 2 and Watch 2 Classic were released earlier this year, and the Watch 2 Classic even earned a spot in our Most Wanted list for wearables. Both of the watches are now on sale at Best Buy - $179 ($120 off) for the Watch 2 and $219 ($148 off) for the Watch 2 Classic. These are the same discounts that were live on Black Friday.
There aren't as many big players making Android Wear watches right now, but Huawei is one of them. The second-gen Huawei Watch came out earlier this year, and the price has remained pretty close to the MSRP. However, both versions of the watch are on sale today for more than $100 off MSRP.Internally, both the Watch 2 and Watch 2 Classic are the same piece of hardware. They've got 4GB of storage, a Snapdragon 2100, GPS, and NFC. On the outside, the Huawei Watch 2 is a sporty device with an integrated silicone band. The Classic is a bit more conventional with a hybrid leather/rubber band you can easily swap. The Huawei Watch 2 has been bouncing around between $300 and $250 in recent months, but now it's $179 on Amazon. The Watch 2 Classic has been consistently close to $350, but now it's $219. These are solid deals if you're looking for a high-end Android Wear watch.Source: Huawei Watch 2, Huawei Watch 2 Classic
The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro is a premium offering that comes at a premium price. It is being sold in two models - Sport and Classic. While the former is priced at Rs 22,990, the latter goes for Rs 24,990. The smartwatch can be purchased from Flipkart starting September 18.
To be entirely clear: if you are an iPhone user the Apple Watch is the only smartwatch that works for you, right now. But that may change in time, and it is always good to know what the opposition has up its sleeve. Here then, is our Apple Watch vs Huawei Watch comparison. The Porsche Design Huawei Watch GT 2 is exactly what it sounds like: a Watch GT 2 Pro in a Porsche Design shell, but that shell is a massive leg-up on the regular model. The actual watch body is no different from the Watch GT 2 Pro, comprised of titanium, sapphire, and ceramic. Where it differs is the chain-link titanium strap, which you can swap out for a silicone band that comes in the box if you want instead. The metal links can be removed with ease thanks to individual quick-release pins, meaning that you don't need any specialist tools to fit the watch to your wrist. This isn't a watch to wear for a workout though, as the metal strap will chafe uncomfortably against your skin. The same can also be said when sleeping with it on, as the metal links can sometimes be uncomfortable against the skin, and sometimes I've found the clasp can even come undone too. The titanium strap also adds a bit of weight to it, which you can mitigate by swapping it out for the silicone strap instead.
It's taken a little over two years for Huawei to present a new version of the Huawei Watch. This time, however, the company has opted to move away from luxury to focus instead on sport and fitness. This shouldn't come as a big surprise as Huawei is moving with the global market trend, which is taking smartwatches in this direction. The Huawei Watch 2 is expected to be released some time in April and will cost around $350. Color-wise, it will be available in Carbon Black, Dynamic Orange, Titanium Grey and Concrete Grey. The Huawei Watch 2 Classic will be available from May for $420 in Titanium Grey with a black leather armband.
The first Huawei Watch had an elegant metal casing with a thin frame and chic detailing. The new Huawei Watch 2 has a slicker and more dynamic feel about it. The design is a little reminiscent of the G-Shock watches from the 90s, but fits within the rest of the style. The plain black watch in particular is rather plain and looks a bit dull. The plastic used doesn't necessarily look high-quality, and the bracelets could be softer. The latter, however, can be switched out quickly and swiftly thanks to a quick release mechanism and standard width bracelet bracket.
The Huawei Watch 2's battery life specs sound fantastic and too good to be true. "Up to three weeks in Watch Mode", stated the press release, and ten hours in "Traning Mode". For "normal use", the battery lasts up to two days. However, we only managed to get two days out of it if the watch had no SIM card inserted and only had Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and then only barely. With an active SIM card, the Huawei Watch 2 will need to be charged every evening. You can save a little battery power by deactivating automatic waking when you move your wrist, and only wake the watch by pressing the button. In Watch Mode, which turns the smartwatch into a pure watch with step counter displays nothing but the time, and this must be activated manually in the battery settings. In the mode, the display is dark here and only wakes up when you raise your hand to your face to read the time. Clearly, this increases the run time massively, albeit at the expense of almost all functions of the Watch 2.
The Galaxy Watch5 looks like a traditional watch with a simple aluminum case that surrounds a round OLED touchscreen under scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The screen looks crisp with a 450450 resolution for the 44 mm and 396396 for the 40 mm, and the brightness level is high enough to make it completely readable outdoors. The bezel around the screen can act as a touch scroll wheel for zipping through long lists, replacing the physical rotating bezel on older Samsung watches. The 40 mm Watch5 is priced at $250, which is $100 less than the Pixel Watch, and the 44 mm is just a little more expensive at $280. If you want LTE in addition to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, that adds another $40 to the price.
